Balancing Ambition and Well-being

Business consulting balance

Hi, team! It’s your friend, Mary, with the “I” in Team series where you can find, be, and build your positive influence. After the pandemic, the lines between professional and personal became blurred. While some of us bounced back easily, there are many who may still struggle with balancing ambition and well-being. Keep in mind that this balance will look different for everyone and is defined individually. We are hopeful that these strategies will collectively help you maintain the delicate balance between achieving your ambitions and nurturing your well-being.

Set Clear Goals and Priorities

If you are familiar with our brand, you know we always teach about creating S.M.A.R.T. goals. Balancing ambition and well-being is no different. If you wish to lead a life that allows you to be successful both professionally and personally, you must be S.M.A.R.T. Be specific about what success looks like in both of these areas, create measurements that allow you to determine if you are meeting your goals, keep your goals attainable for what you have or will have in the near future, ensure you are being realistic about what you can achieve in a timely manner.

Being timely (or using appropriate time management techniques) will allow you to remain S.M.A.R.T. Schedule both professional and personal tasks, including rest, hobbies, and time with family and friends. Carving out time for yourself is necessary because you only have 24 hours in a day; in the words of my friend who is very good at doing this for herself, “If I don’t take the time, someone else will.” She means that if she doesn’t schedule time in her calendar for her personal needs, someone will schedule that time in her calendar for their professional needs.

Reflect and Adjust Regularly

Whenever we preach about S.M.A.R.T., we always add the little caveat that you need to reflect and adjust your goals regularly to ensure they stay S.M.A.R.T. Life is not predictable. Even when you have all the information you can gather, goals can still elude us. Instead of giving up or becoming frustrated, slow down, take a step back, and reexamine what you need to do and adjust in order to reach your goals. This requires you to embrace flexibility. Be like bamboo and bend in the wind; becoming too rigid will make you break.

Foster Supportive Relationships

Surround yourself with people who possess the qualities you wish to have or who inspire you to keep going. Having positive, hardworking, supportive people around you will encourage you to be positive, hardworking, and supportive of yourself. These can be colleagues, coworkers, friends, or anyone you feel helps elevate you. There is something to be said about knowing someone through the company they keep.

Practice Self-Care

If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t meet any of your goals, personal or professional. You need to get regular exercise, even if it’s just a walk at lunch or after work. Get outside or into a gym and have some you time. Exercise reduces stress and can assist you in working through problems. Some of my best ideas come to me when I am at the gym. Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet; feed your mind and body with nutritious foods. Your body is constantly generating new cells, billions every single day. Everything you put into your body becomes part of you, literally.

Get enough sleep! You’ll know how much is good for you. Some people prefer 6 hours a night, while others may need 9 or more hours. If you feel tired every single day, you might not be sleeping enough. You should always seek professional help if there is something you need help with. Whether you talk to a doctor about your health, a psychologist about your mental well-being, or a coach to help you develop new skills, you are never alone.

Bottom Line

Balancing ambition and well-being requires setting S.M.A.R.T. goals. Clearly define success in both professional and personal realms and use metrics to track progress. Effective time management is crucial; schedule work and personal activities, including rest and hobbies. Regularly reflect and adjust goals to stay flexible. Surround yourself with supportive people and prioritize self-care through exercise, a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and professional help when needed.
